Subjects Taught

I am a 1998 graduate of Wilcox Central High School in Camden, Alabama.  I graduated from the University of West Alabama in Livingston,  where I earned a Bachelors of Science Degree in Elementary Education, in 2004. I later returned to the University of West Alabama and earned a Masters Degree in Elementary Education in 2011.  I am currently pursuing a Education Specialist Degree in Elementary Education from the University of West Alabama.

2018-2019 marks the beginning of my 15th year of teaching at J. E. Hobbs Elementary School.  I began teaching at J. E. Hobbs in 2004, as a third grade teacher.  I taught third grade for one year.  I was reassigned to the Kindergarten Department in 2005, and have been there for the remainder of my teaching profession.

I am Valerie Louise McCants.  I am the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otha Tillman McCants, Sr.  I am the youngest child of twelve children.  I grew up, and still reside in Coy, Alabama.  I attended and graduated from the Wilcox County Public School System in 1998. I am currently employed with the Wilcox County Board Of Education, at J. E. Hobbs Elementary School, as a Kindergarten teacher.  My hobbies include, being among friends and family,  as well as children, singing, reading, and writing. I am a firm believer that all children can learn if they are given the opportunity to learn. I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my desire as a educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by creating an environment that is safe and conducive to learning. There are three elements that I believe are conducive to establishing such an environment, (1) the teacher acting as a guide, (2) allowing the child's natural curiosity to direct his/her learning, and (3) promoting respect for all things and all people.
